Latnterns made of paper and bamboo have been widely used in Japan since the beginning of the fourteen century.

 The lanterns used in fesutival of late summer,are constructed in much the same way as other paper bamboo lanterns,although plastic versions abound.  

Decorations on the surface are paticular to the event. For obon parades,the lanterns lights a path for ancestral spirits to find the way home.
